Marble Nero Marquina
This black marble from northern Spain (Biscay / Basque Country) can be recognized by its fine, white veins. It is particularly beautiful when polished.
Mineral content: A limestone resulting from mud (peat) with white calcite veins and fossil remains.
Workability
This marble is particularly interesting to work due to the possibility of creating contrast and dialogue between the grey tones resulting from grinding and tooling and the black tones resulting from polishing.
However, Nero Marquina is not uniformly crystalline and is in fact not even truly marble. It' s a brittle stone made moreso by its fine veins.
Working of this stone with traditional hand tools is difficult as breaks and chips are frequent. Diamond tools solve this problem.
Nero Marquina is not weather-proof. The finish is easily dulled by rain and exposure to heat and sun affects the surface and structure but this problem can be solved by using an appropriate protective agent.
